🦘Why We Changed Our Name?

20+ events this week, interesting news and more

Hey Guys 👋

You may be wondering why I suddenly changed this newsletter from “Adelaide Insider” to “Adelaide Digest". Put simply, I was contacted by another local business with a very similar name. They’ve been around for over seven years and respectfully asked me to change it.

I wasn’t aware of this business until they reached out. I wouldn’t say a name change was something I was delighted to do, but I didn’t want to escalate things. I think it’s important to keep a good relationship with other local businesses and maintain a professional and fair reputation.

I always try to turn a negative into a positive, and I think the new name is actually better than the old one. But I wonder what you guys think of it—let me know in the poll at the end of this email!

Have a great weekend!

~Michael

Sammy D Foundation-Standing Up For Youth Violence

Help honour the life of 17-year-old Sam Davis, whose tragic death 17 years ago sparked a movement to end youth violence. On May 4th, the Sammy D Foundation marks this emotional milestone with the return of #schnitty4sam — a heartfelt community campaign using Sam’s favourite meal, the schnitzel, as a symbol of mateship, awareness, and action.

👉 How to Get Involved:

  • Eat a schnitty at a participating venue in South Australia or grab one from Drakes Supermarkets.

  • Buy a virtual schnitty if you can’t make it in person — it’s just 25AUD to support violence prevention education.

  • Share your meal on socials with the hashtag #schnitty4sam to spread the word.

Roger Drake’s Epic Business Journey

Roger Drake, the man behind South Australia's largest independent supermarket chain, started his career humbly in 1965, working at Coles. He was just 21 years old when he stepped into the retail world, learning the ropes on the shop floor.

In 1974, at age 30, he took a bold risk and purchased a small three-lane supermarket called Jack & Jill’s Foodland in Mitcham, Adelaide, for $29,000. With just four staff and big ambition, Roger stocked shelves, cleaned floors, and built personal connections with every customer. His focus was simple: serve locals better than the big chains ever could.

As retail giants like Coles and Woolworths expanded, Roger didn’t back down — he doubled down on local. From sourcing produce from South Australian farms to supporting small-scale suppliers, Roger built Drakes into more than just a store; it became part of the community.

Over the decades, that hands-on hustle paid off. Drakes Supermarkets now operates over 60 stores across South Australia and Queensland, with more than 6,000 employees and annual revenues surpassing 1 billion. Showing Roger Drake is an inspiring local story.
