Adelaide Digest Is Back!

Hey everyone, 👋
It's been a while!
Lot’s of fun events this weekend and an interesting piece of history I bet most of you didn’t know.
If you've been wondering what happened to Adelaide Digest, the truth is that it became difficult to keep running financially without advertising or sponsors, so I ended up putting it on the back burner.
Since then, I've been focusing on building my own business, Adelaide Surface Cleaning, which specialises in residential exterior cleaning around Adelaide.
I've missed sending this newsletter to you guys so I've decided it's time to bring it back.
The plan is to get back to sharing events, positive news, history, trivia and fun things about Adelaide.
You'll also occasionally see Adelaide Surface Cleaning featured here. Having my own business gives me a way to help support the newsletter and keep it going, and I want to be upfront about that.
Anyway, enough about me. Here's what's happening around Adelaide this weekend! 👇
Happy Adelaide Digest is back every Thursday again? |

🌊 Wakeboard Park and Riverfront Stays Coming to the Murray
More than 4.6M will fund new tourism projects along the River Murray through the Sustainable Communities Program. This includes 1.75M for SA's first permanent cable wakeboard park and aqua park in Murray Bridge, 1.95M for 20 new riverfront rooms at Hotel Renmark, and 775k for Riverland Clearwater at Pike River. The money is part of a wider 12.7M investment in River Murray communities, covering jobs, housing, health and farming. INFO
🌳 New Community Space Opens in Rosewater
Almost a kilometre of land along a disused railway line in Rosewater has become a new community space, thanks to the 1.5M Rosewater Railway Loop project. It has a new path, a picnic area, native plants, better lighting and a colourful mural designed with help from local Year 5 and 6 students. The loop links Rosewater, Ottoway and Gillman with the Outer Harbor Greenway and Port Adelaide centre. INFO
🩸 SA Needs 800 Blood Donors This Week
Lifeblood needs 800 more South Australian donors this week, after a long cold and flu season pushed national blood supplies to their lowest level in almost a decade. Supplies have fallen 60% since June, and more than 16k extra donors are needed across Australia. All blood types are needed, and you can book on 13 14 95 or through the Lifeblood app. INFO
🐾 Free Bird Flu Webinar for Pet Owners
Pet owners can join a free online forum to hear from the experts leading SA's H5 bird flu response. Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Skye Fruean will be joined by people from SA Health, the Department for Environment and Water and the RSPCA, sharing tips to keep cats and dogs safe. Around 200 protective equipment kits are also going to vets and wildlife carers across the state, and the next community forum is in Port Lincoln on 17 November. INFO

⚡ The Story Behind the Stobie Pole

Ever wondered why Adelaide's power poles look nothing like the wooden ones interstate?
Back in the 1920s, South Australia had a problem—there simply wasn't enough long, straight, termite-proof timber to hold up the state's growing power network. So James Cyril Stobie, an engineer with the Adelaide Electric Supply Company, came up with his own solution. His design used two steel I-beams joined by tie-bolts, with concrete poured into the gap between them. On 15 July 1924, he applied to patent his new pole, and it was accepted in November 1925.
The very first poles went up on South Terrace in 1924—and they've been part of the landscape ever since. Today SA Power Networks makes about 4,500 of them a year at its Angle Park plant. They stand anywhere from 9 to 26 metres tall, carry everything from 240 to 275,000 volts, and are built to last more than 80 years.
So next time you walk past one, take a closer look—you're looking at a true South Australian invention that's still holding up the state a century later.

On which Adelaide street were the very first Stobie poles put up in 1924? |

Look at the difference a clean can make 👀
It's amazing how much dirt and grime can build up on a driveway over time. This one came up brilliantly after a professional pressure clean!
If your driveway or outdoor paving could use some attention, I'm now taking bookings around Adelaide.
