Leafy sea dragons (Phycodurus eques), South Australia’s marine emblem since 2001, are iconic to SA’s southern coastline, especially around Rapid Bay, Port Noarlunga, and Encounter Bay. Their leaf-like appendages mimic seaweed, providing exceptional camouflage among kelp and seagrass. While they’re a celebrated SA symbol, their range also extends to coastal waters of Western Australia and Victoria, making them a rare sight across southern Australia. Growing up to 35 cm, they drift with tiny pectoral fins, feeding on plankton and small crustaceans. Males carry up to 250 eggs under their tails for 6–8 weeks, releasing miniature replicas that blend instantly into their surroundings.

Protected in SA’s marine parks like Encounter Marine Park, leafy sea dragons face threats from pollution, coastal development, and climate change. SA’s pristine waters, particularly in Encounter Bay, are prime viewing spots for divers and snorkelers.
